Experience Design Director

Purpose of role

As a Barbarian Creative department member, you will define the future of customer experience for our clients. You will transform brands with human-centered design and impact the future of digital experiences, communications, and marketing.

As Experience Design Director, you will have an obsessive passion for experience design and continually investigate consumer behaviors. You will provide leadership for the brands you work on and understand how consumers might see and interact with a brand. You will have the experience and ability to design to an industry-leading standard. You will oversee multiple accounts from conception to execution and directly manage associate experience design directors and designers.

  • Deliver and inspire award-winning work from both yourself and others who work with you, influencing where appropriate a dramatic change through ideas, creativity and the use of interactive media.

  • Constantly influence trends in digital design through an obsessive passion for design. Design to an industry-leading standard. Manage and exceed client expectations on every aspect.
  • Provide creative leadership and collaborate across disciplines to create fully immersive brand experiences for clients.
  • Oversee and guide the creative excellence of our work, with a commitment to producing inspiring and compelling design.
  • Build strong relationships with clients that foster trust, serving as a creative expert for design and marketing projects.
  • Able to scope the project and recommend the right talent by understanding the brief. 
  • Lead by example to inspire creative colleagues to originate pioneering designs that conceptualize world-class solutions. Play an active role in brainstorming, idea generation, and communicates ideas and thoughts clearly.
  • Draw on expert knowledge in all aspects of human-centered design on everything from interaction principles to interface design best practices across all touchpoint.
  • Work closely with visual and interaction experts and give them guidance.
  • Relentlessly simplify and distill complex processes into intuitive and elegant experiences.
  • Deploy design resources in the most appropriate way to meet day-to-day challenges, ensuring successful delivery of all projects.
  • Contribute thought leadership for internal marketing efforts and profile-building initiatives that grow Barbarian’s reputation in the design space.

Qualifications and experience

  • A robust background with extensive experience in a client facing, CX leadership role in a digital agency environment.
  • Extensive experience working as an XD leader in a similar agency environment.
  • Demonstrated business success in leading collaborative multi-functional teams, including project planning, to winning a number of industry recognized awards.
  • A strong track record in large-scale project planning, including accurate estimation of costs and timing, with limited overruns.
  • Proven track record generating new business.
  • Expert in digital transformation and creating a seamless digital ecosystem.
  • Passion for design-led solutions.
  • Experience of creative management of multiple design projects and people simultaneously.
  • Design, animation and film-based individuals should have extensive experience with all the relevant software packages and hardware, and a working knowledge of emerging platforms.
  • Experience in recruiting creative talent.
  • Experience developing/leading client relationships.
  • Exceptional information presentation (visual and written) experience.
  • A degree in Design, Interaction Design, HCI or other UX certifications preferred but not compulsory.
